| This exciting program was developed for use in a variety of educational and other environments. Participants engage in many phases of astronaut training experiences, including space flight simulations, rocketry and astronomy. Hands-on experiences include “flying” a Space Shuttle mission using an operational Space Shuttle cockpit simulator and a working Mission Control Center. “Space Explorers” , in teams of six, learn to “fly” the shuttle using simulations based upon "The Space Shuttle Operators Manual", written by Kerry M. Joels, Ph.D., of The Total Learning Research Institute, Inc. | ![]() |
"Space
Explorers"
was developed over several years by a team of skilled, highly experienced,
education professionals, dedicated to teaching problem solving, cooperative
learning, diversity
understanding, and integrated curriculum for all students. These professionals
have created and directed programs for NASA, the Smithsonian’s National
Air & Space Museum, and the Junior Engineering Technical Society.
In addition, this team developed the Young Astronauts program, conceived
the Challenger Center simulation experience, developed award educational
software, nationally recognized children’s educational television programs
and multi-disciplinary learning environments, including NASA’s Classroom
of the Future.
